Prepare to disembark ... we have arrived! Whew! We left Peoria, IL yesterday at 2:30pm and arrived in St. Petersburg at 3:30pm Thursday (local time)... which was 6:30am Thursday IL time. What a whirlwind day of lay-overs and flights. We had a great trip "across the pond" but a few things I've learned...
- it's a pain when someone decides to travel with their pooch and it begins to whine with 3-hours before touchdown
- Lufthansa only allows 8 kgs each for a carry-on. (But, after some last minute maneuvering, we were able to get a pretty even distribution between the two bags and they passed)
Nonetheless, besides some mild moments of excitement ... Ie: ticket reads Gate A79, but then got changed to Gate A78a without me noticing, we are here!
So, we are here and pretty jet-lagged because of lack of sleep. We have forced ourselves to stay up to meet the Russia schedule though. We went and grabbed a quick bite to eat in our hotel lobby... they have complimentary snacks several nights a week. We got to enjoy pickled herring with onions, pickled sauerkraut and carrots, pickles, pickled garlic, and some pickled green stalk-y thing, but still not sure what it was. Leslie LOVED the pickled herring ... NOT!! So, I think the Russians don't think a food is worth eating unless it can somehow be pickled, and I also think I have a better grasp on why it is that Russians drink so much Vodka ... need something to wash some of that stuff down! :-) Leslie made Borscht the other night (Russian Beet soup)... it was the one night in AGES that the dog didn't beg at the table. Sydney just laid on the living room floor with a look that clearly said, "No thanks! I'm good! I'll just eat that dry, crusty stuff in my food bowl tonight." :-)
Anyhow, we leave the hotel at ~8a tomorrow to begin some of our "official business"... more to follow.
